A private society for creative and magical explorers
I can’t begin to express how excited I am to announce that the Firefly Guild is officially open and receiving new members. This is a huge heart and soul project that’s been brewing behind the scenes for 18 months. It all started with a seed of an idea and slowly grew into something I could never have imagined when the fireflies and I started conspiring together. It’s such a joy to finally be able to share it with you.
What is the Firefly Guild?
The Firefly Guild is a private society of women devoted to explorations in creativity, mythic living, nature’s wisdom, enchantment, and the pursuit of our creative and personal dreams.
We believe in…
- the power of a community of kindred spirits
- the importance of living our values and gifts
- the magic that resides within us and surrounds us
- and the deep belonging that comes from being in close relationship with each other, the land, and our non-human kin.
If you’re curious what we do in the Firefly Guild, take a look through the membership level descriptions for details about each tier’s benefits. Each month I introduce a new theme that guides our creative and magical explorations together. Depending on the guild membership level you choose, there are also videos with creative invitations, audio adventures, live meet-ups, and inspiration for working with our core tools (Field Notebook, Magical Diary, and Book of Keys). We have an active and welcoming community in our private guild-only groups on Wyldehaven, our online home on MightyNetworks. And there’s much more.
Several of the members and I were chatting recently and laughed as we all agreed how difficult it is to describe what the Firefly Guild is in a nutshell simply because it doesn’t fit neatly into any typical category. It is unique and meant to be so.
Firefly Guild Origins
The Firefly Guild is an outgrowth of the classes, writing, and mentoring I’ve done in my work here at the Mojo Lab since 2015. It’s born of a desire to explore new directions, create a new home for our community online, and to welcome into our circle other kindred spirits who share our interests and are eager to explore new landscapes with us.
I love teaching classes, but those only happen a few times a year and by design are more intensive and focused journeys. I’ve found there’s a deep magic that resides in an ongoing connection as we walk through the year together as a community. After the experience of leading two year-long programs, I found myself back at the drawing board in the last half of 2019, crafting a different way for us to come together and keep the magic going.
I wanted a rhythm that would be easy for us to sustain together, a structure that would be flexible, provide ease of access, and allow new members the freedom to join whenever they wished. I wanted to make it easy to tuck into our lives, to run enchantingly alongside our day-to-day responsibilities, relationships, work, and other interests. Having several membership options with different benefits and levels of engagement felt like a wonderful way to do that. And Patreon surprised me as being the perfect home for what I was envisioning.
What’s Behind the Name
The name “Firefly Guild” came together in a moment of inspiration and serendipity. The Firefly is a totem of illumination, creativity, inspired action, living by our own lights, shining with our gifts, and walking in wonder and magic in this world. In Wonder Camp, a program I lead online each summer, Firefly Meadows is the mythic realm for the element of Fire. I wanted to draw that thread forward into our society as a lantern to guide our new adventures together.
And then there’s the term “guild,” another word I love for its powerful historic roots and symbolism. Arising in the Middle Ages, guilds were alliances of mutually supporting individuals focused around a craft or art. They were places for sharing knowledge, developing new skills, creative expression, innovation, and mutual support. Guilds for women were rare; a few sprung up in the Victorian era (after the golden age of guilds had passed) as a kind of private social club or society around a common purpose or goal. And then, of course, there are the inspiring fictional guilds and craft halls from literature and online virtual worlds both artistic and magical.
I wanted our own guild, one that connected back to the primacy of handcrafts and analog arts in classic guilds but one created by and for women walking in the modern world with an affinity for creative and magical exploration. It required an alchemical blending of what are often seen as opposing elements: historical with modern, natural with digital, magical with practical (but never mundane).
Rather than focus on a single craft or art, the Firefly Guild emphasizes the alchemy of cross-crafting, the latter a concept I gleefully adopted from the wise Masterharper Robinton in the Pern books by Anne McCaffrey. Cross-crafting is a big part of our adventures here in the guild and I love the freedom that gives us to explore new directions and make new creative connections as we go along.
How it Works
New members can join the Firefly Guild at any point during a month. You’ll be charged at the time you subscribe and given immediate access to all posts to date and benefits for your tier membership. Then, starting on the first of the following month and, unless you cancel, the first of every month thereafter you’ll be charged your continuing membership fee. You can change tiers and manage your membership directly in your Patreon account. Easy and low fuss. I love that.
When you join, you’ll find your invitation and personal link to join our secret Wyldehaven community on MightyNetworks (and some other key intel, as well) posted in the Firefly Guild. The materials you receive as a Firefly Guild member are posted each month on Patreon. The juicy discussion and mischief happens in the Guild Hall and other secret groups at Wyldehaven. Also, be sure to grab the Patreon app for your mobile devices and connect your account for quick access to the guild when you’re off adventuring. (And yes, we have our own separate app for Wydlehaven, too.)
Oh, and about the Keys…
When you read through the membership tier descriptions on Patreon, you’ll note I mention keys frequently. Keys play an important role in the Firefly Guild. I’ll freely admit, I have a deep fondness for antique keys (along with old maps, compasses, air ships, antique clothing, handmade books, and other treasures from the past). Blame my many years working as a professional archaeologist and architectural historian.
Simply put, keys are magic. They open, close, protect, and grant (or deny) passage or access. They hold the magic of possibilities, intention, and choice. Their symbolism is richly rooted in a wide variety of stories, myths, magic, and beliefs from many cultures.
By their nature, keys can bestow access and power to those who hold them. In a world that seems increasingly dominated by those who seek power over others and restriction of access to a privileged few, I believe in the power of crafting our own keys. We’re all keymakers and key keepers in our own right. The keys we forge and share can open the doors to enchantment and ways of living and walking in this world that nourish and support us, our creative spirits, the land, and our non-human kith and kin.
I’m the Keeper of the Keys for the Firefly Guild. As such, I hold the space for our community and hold the door open for the women who wish to join us. You are most welcome here.

“I never knew I was creating a world which was an antithesis to the world around me which was full of sorrows, full of wars, full of difficulties. I was creating the world I wanted, and into this world, after it is created, you invited others and then you attract those who have affinities and this becomes a universe.” ~ Anaïs Nin
